An attractive center for everyone was the goal of the previously very built-up Schlossplatz (Palace Square). Working together, a concept was developed that included numerous tree plantings, green islands, and a water feature to improve the quality of life in the city center. Particular attention was paid to creating both a recreational space and long-lasting, climate-resilient shading through tree planting according to the sponge city principle—an urban planning approach designed to absorb and manage rainwater efficiently. The concept was developed by 3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur, with design and implementation planning by Kosaplaner GmbH and Yewo Landscapes GmbH.
The Schlossplatz combines green spaces and seating areas, creating a space for events and making it an inviting place to linger. Beneath the surface, sponge city infrastructure works to store rainwater and allow it to slowly seep away, reducing strain on the sewer system during heavy rainfall. These measures also enhance the microclimate through local evaporation. At the opening, the Schlossplatz successfully demonstrated its adaptability for events, which was very well received.
The sponge city principle for trees is an innovative construction method that ensures the survival of urban trees by allowing them to thrive even in densely built environments.
As an expert in rainwater management and a partner of the sponge city working group, we have developed a technical solution that is both effective and easy to implement. It cleans polluted rainwater and safely releases it into the ground. The ACO Combipoint inlet chamber, part of ACO's specialized drainage system, has been expanded to include additional sponge city components, allowing it to be adapted for specific projects that follow the sponge city approach.
