Rheinboulevard, Cologne
The right-hand bank of the Rhine flowing through the city of Cologne has now become even more attractive with the Rheinboulevard. An around 500-metre-long open staircase provides visitors with an incomparable view of the famous Old Town panorama with Cologne cathedral. ACO is responsible for the drainage.
The Rheinboulevard in Cologne-Deutz received the highest award for landscape architecture: the Landscape Architectural Prize 2017. The Association of German Landscape Architects presented the award in honour of the contemporary, social and environmentally orientated open space and landscape architecture.
The project was also a winner of the polis award 2017 for urban development in the attractive open space category. The prize is awarded in co-operation with the Bundesstiftung Baukultur and the Deutscher Städtetag.
A ten-metre-wide boulevard flanked with trees located above the open staircase provides a direct connection for pedestrians and cyclists in the north-south direction. The new open space created by the boulevard is drained by two lines of drains. The ACO DRAIN® Multiline drainage system was used here. The landscape architects selected the D 400 mesh grating as the uniform cover for the lines of drains.
The third construction phase of the Rheinboulevard involved the installation of around 5,500 square metres of large-scale concrete slabs and around 2,300 square metres of natural stone. The drainage of these open spaces is also optimised using ACO DRAIN® Multiline drainage channels.
